Ludovic Morlot brings an electrifying rarity with him from French-speaking Europe, in the form of Cesar Franck’s Le chasseur maudit (‘The Accursed Huntsman’). The Belgian composer’s symphonic poem is a wild and thrilling ride that tells the old German tale of the ‘wild hunter’ who defied the Sabbath while hunting. The music moves from the peace of a Sunday morning to an electrifying Demon’s Chase, with the climactic sweep and dramatic power of a Wagner opera or a Rachmaninoff symphony.
Before the world premiere of Norwegian composer Ørjan Matre’s new Percussion Concerto comes another great piece of orchestral storytelling. In the old folk tale of a puppet springing to life, Igor Stravinsky had the starting point for his stylistic breakthrough Petrushka – a ballet that he hoped would depict Russia with ‘quick tempos, smells of Russian food, sweat and glistening leather boots’.
